Postpartum depression is a mental illness that can start at any time between your pregnancy to a year after you or your partner give birth. Someone with post partum may feel guilty, have frequent thoughts about being an unfit parent and not enjoy their baby. If left untreated, this could escalate to violent thoughts towards yourself of your baby, even if you feel as if you would never act on it.
Postpartum depression in no way makes you a bad parent and deserves to be supported just as much as other kind of mental illness. It is more common in mothers but can affect any new parents, even those who adopt! It can be cause by once again, many different things including but not limited to family history, trauma, sleep deprivation, environment and biology.
